I recently watched the first episode of the Boris and Nicole Show in which Boris and Nicole interviewed Alfonso Ribeiro. When Alfonso was asked,”You have so many talents and interests. How did you focus on acting?”, his response was,”I didn’t…my dad said to me growing up…,”The more eggs you have in the basket…,the more opportunities you have for one of them to hatch” and throughout my entire life, I just kept putting things in the basket…”
I have only ever thought about this concept through the well known saying,”Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket.” This saying implies that I have a fixed number of eggs and multiple baskets. If my first choice (basket) is not deemed reliable, I need to have a backup plan (basket). This saying tends to discourage me because it implies that in order to be wise, I must not pursue my first choice with everything I have. I must hold back in order to be able to make a smooth transition to my second choice if my first choice does not pan out.
What Alfonso said carries the connotation that I have one basket and an infinite amount of eggs (interests). It implies that I can do and be whatever I want. I can pursue anything and everything I am interested in. I don’t have to choose one career or path in life.
In my opinion, these are two very similar quotes with completely different connotations. Just some food for thought.
I hope you have a lovely day.
Until next time,
Phoenix
